The Mommy Glow and Grow

A journey of motherhood, self-care and love.

  • “In the embrace of nature, a breath of fresh air soothes my heart—calming my anxiousness, nervousness, and excitement as I wait to welcome my baby into the world.”

Bringing a child into the world is a life-changing experience, and for many mothers, the journey to childbirth comes with important decisions—including where and how to give birth. In my case, I delivered via Caesarean section (C-section) at a public hospital in Baguio, but with the care of a private doctor and the comfort of a private room.

If you’re considering the same option, here’s my personal experience, including the cost, hospital facilities, and what to expect when choosing a private birth experience in a public hospital.

    The Day of My C-Section

On October 6, 2023, at around 8:30 a.m., as advised by my OB-GYN, we rushed to Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) because I was experiencing contractions and bleeding at 37 weeks. To avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot, we decided to take a taxi.

Upon arrival at the hospital, I was immediately assessed. After checking my baby’s position, heart rate, and my condition, my doctor recommended an emergency C-section for a safe delivery. Since I had already coordinated with a private doctor for my prenatal care, the process was smoother, and I was given the option of a private room for recovery.

The Cost Breakdown of My Private C-Section at a Public Hospital

While public hospitals are generally more affordable, opting for a private doctor and a private room increases the cost. Here’s a breakdown of what I spent for my C-section delivery at BGHMC:

💡 Tip: If you have PhilHealth, make sure your payments are updated to maximize your benefits.

The Comfort of Choosing a Private Birth Experience in a Public Hospital

Opting for a private doctor and a private room in a public hospital offered a more personalized and comfortable experience. Here’s what stood out:

    • Private Doctor’s Care and Expertise. Having my own OB-GYN meant I had consistent prenatal care and a doctor I trusted throughout my pregnancy. Unlike public hospital setups where you may be assigned to different doctors, my private doctor handled my entire birthing process.
    • The Private Room Advantage. Staying in a private room provided privacy, comfort, and better rest after the surgery. Unlike ward rooms, where multiple mothers share the space, my private recovery room allowed my husband to stay with me, which made a huge difference in my postpartum experience.
    • Priority in Hospital Services. Although BGHMC is a public hospital, choosing a private doctor helped streamline some processes, including faster admission, access to operating rooms, and postnatal care.

Things to Expect and Prepare for a Private C-Section in a Public Hospital

If you’re considering this option, here are some important tips based on my experience:

    • Secure a Private OB-GYN Early. Discuss your birth plan, hospital choice, and costs during your prenatal visits.
    • Prepare Financially. Since private medical care in a public hospital is more expensive, plan your budget ahead of time.
    • Process PhilHealth & Assistance Programs, Maximize your benefits to reduce hospital expenses.
    • Pack Your Hospital Bag Early. Public hospitals provide basic necessities, but having your own maternity and baby essentials ensures convenience.
    • Have a Support System. A private setup allows a companion, which is helpful for recovery.

Final Thoughts: Is a Private C-Section in a Public Hospital Worth It?

For me, opting for a private birth experience at BGHMC was the best decision. While it came at a higher cost, the personalized care, trusted doctor, and private room comfort made my C-section journey smoother and less stressful.

If you’re an expectant mom looking for a balance between affordability and quality maternity care, this setup might be a great choice for you. Your comfort and peace of mind during childbirth are just as important as the cost.
